Consumer discounts, the right way
Plenty of companies give veterans a discount. The trick is proving who you are without giving away more than they need, and knowing which deals are worth it.
The short version
I'm a Marine, and I work in IT. Here's what I'd tell a buddy. Most veteran discounts are real. Every one of them asks you to prove you served, and that's where people hand over far more than they should.
- Get one photo ID that says "Veteran." Keep your DD-214 at home.
- Know who is verifying you online and what they keep.
- Don't skip the government perks. Check the regular price before you celebrate.
The finder below lists discounts I confirmed on each company's own page, with the date I checked. Open the company's page before you buy, because offers change.
Proving you served: four cards that work
The VA lists four ways to prove you're a veteran, and you only need one of them. A DoD ID card covers retirees and anyone still serving in the Guard or Reserve. The Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) is for veterans enrolled in VA health care. The Veteran ID Card (VIC) is a digital photo ID. New VICs have been digital-only since September 2022. The fourth is a veteran designation on your state driver's license or ID. All 50 states and Puerto Rico offer one.

The VIC is a discount card and nothing more. The VA says plainly that it won't get you onto a base, into a commissary or exchange, through airport security, or into any federal benefit.
New York: put it on your license
Honorably discharged veterans with a New York license, learner permit or non-driver ID can have "Veteran" printed on the card. There's no extra fee for it, though the normal transaction fee applies. Bring form MV-44 and discharge proof showing "Honorable" or "Under Honorable Conditions" to a DMV office, or mail the MV-44 with photocopies, never originals. You can't do it online or by phone. The designation carries over when you renew.

That's the one time I'd show discharge papers for a discount, and it's to a government office. After that, the license in your wallet does the job.
Why your DD-214 stays home
The DD-214 proves your service, and a lot more. The National Archives says it shows your entry and separation dates, your home addresses, your last unit and rank, your job, your awards and your discharge details. Block 3 is your Social Security number.

A copy behind a store counter or in an inbox is an identity-theft kit. If someone does misuse your information, the FTC wants you to report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and work through the recovery steps at IdentityTheft.gov.

Online verification: who's checking you
Online, most companies send you to a third party to check you.
- ID.me is the big one, and VA.gov uses it too. To verify your identity, ID.me asks for your Social Security number and a valid photo ID such as a driver's license or passport. It's a full identity account, so protect it with multifactor sign-in.
- SheerID runs the check inside the retailer's page. It may ask for a document showing your name, branch and status, and veterans must show an honorable discharge. It says it doesn't store uploaded documents or sell your information.
- VerifyPass and GovX work the same way: a profile, a status check, then access to partner offers. Read their privacy terms before you upload anything.

My advice: stick with one service so your data sits in as few places as possible, and always start from the retailer's own page, never a link in a text or email.
The government perks that are really discounts
America the Beautiful Military Lifetime Pass
Veterans, including those who served in the Guard or Reserve, and Gold Star families can get a free lifetime pass. It covers entrance fees at National Park Service and Fish and Wildlife Service sites, and standard amenity fees on Forest Service, BLM, Reclamation and Army Corps of Engineers land. It covers everyone in your private vehicle, or you plus three adults where fees are per person. Veterans show one of the four IDs above. Gold Star families self-certify and download a voucher. The pass is free in person at sites that issue passes. The USGS online store charges a $10 processing fee. The pass doesn't cover camping.

Military exchanges online, and sometimes in person
All honorably discharged veterans can shop the military exchanges online. That's a separate benefit from in-store privileges. Shopping in person at a commissary, exchange or MWR retail facility is open to a narrower group. It includes honorably discharged veterans with a service-connected disability rating, Purple Heart and Medal of Honor recipients, former POWs and some others. The VA says you show your VHIC or a VA letter, along with a passport or driver's license, at checkout. A VIC won't get you in.

Where the real savings are
- Phone and internet. This is a monthly bill, so a small discount adds up over a year. Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T and Xfinity all run military programs that name veterans. Compare against the regular promotions.
- Electronics. Apple and Samsung run military stores that are open to veterans and verify through ID.me.
- Travel. Amtrak gives veterans 10% off the lowest available fare on most trains, but not on sleeper charges. Rental car offers often run through a membership, so read what you're signing up for.
- Home improvement. Home Depot gives honorably discharged veterans 10% off eligible purchases after a one-time online check, with exclusions such as most appliances.
- Cars. Read the fine print here. Toyota, Nissan, Subaru and Ford limit their veteran offers to the first two years after separation. GM, Hyundai and Harley-Davidson name veterans with no time limit.
- Clothing and gear. Common, usually with exclusions and an online cap. Nike's code, for example, applies to the first $500 of an online order.
- Restaurants. These are mostly Veterans Day specials, announced fresh each year. I don't list them until the company posts the year's offer.

The honest caveats
- Discounts change without notice. Samsung and Avis both say in their terms that the offer can change at any time, and the others can too. The date in the finder is when I saw it, not a promise.
- Exclusions are normal. Sale items, certain brands, gift cards, taxes and fees are often left out. Many offers can't be combined with another coupon.
- Compare against the normal price. Ten percent off a high price can still lose to another store's sale.
- Watch for fakes. A "veterans only" deal that wants a wire transfer, a gift card or your DD-214 is a scam.

Quick answers
Do I need a VA disability rating to get veteran discounts?
No. Most retail discounts only ask you to prove you served. A service-connected rating matters for in-person commissary and exchange access, not for store coupons.
Is a VFW or American Legion card enough for the parks pass?
No. The USGS lists cards from those groups as unacceptable for the military pass.
I don't have any veteran ID yet. Where do I start?
Enrolled in VA health care? Request a VHIC. If not, apply online for a VIC.
Can my spouse use it?
Depends on the company. Check the "who" column in the finder.
